Huge backdated electricity bill! Help!

Hi all,
I wonder if someone can help. I moved into a brand new flat just under 2 years ago (22 months to be exact). I contacted the electrcity company EDF when I moved in and heard nothing. I tried again last Summer to get a meter reading sorted but again nothing
Today Ive come home to find a £1000 bill waiting for me and only 7 days to pay it! I heard that they can only backdate you one year if you can prove that I have tried to contact them. Trouble is, I cant, I rang them a couple of times but have nothing in writing
Does anyone know if im liable for the whole bill or just some of it? Also, they cant just expect me to pay a bill of that size in such a short space of time surely?
Any help appreciated guys and girls

Definitely expect time to pay, but you'd have to negotiate that rather than have it offered to you with the bill. Not sure about the one year rule - expect someone will clarify.0

The billing code say only back 1 year if it is their fault. If EDF have been registered as the supplier to that metering point since or before you moved in and they have sent no bills (includes to occupier) then they are at fault and the 1 year applies.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Could the bill be just for 12 months? Have you checked the dates?
Did you write to EDF?
This problem often occurs with new build properties. The developer usually has the bills sent to their business address initially as they are liable for all the electricity used untill the flat is occupied.
If EDF have not raised any sort of bill then you are only liable for the last 12 months. However if they have raised any bill then you are liable for the whole period.0 -
Do you have a mobile phone or landline bill with calls itemised? It will take some trawling through, but can be used as evidence you contacted the energy supplier.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
