Over fussy letting agents!!

Moving into smaller rental property next week,
all refs ect fine.

Ive asked letting agency about painting daughters bedroom,
they said I would have to bring a paint tester pot or 2 into
them so they can ok it.
Also ive got to ask for permission to put blinds up.
I said surely as long as the house is as it was when i moved in
when i do move out, i should be able to live there as i wish?
within reason, just normally!!
Im not asking for anything, just a few improvments really
to make it look better and more homely, as i said, i'll whitewash it
when i do move out whenever.

Do you think its over the top, or are they all like this?
Im not going to trash the place and im clean and tidy.
But this seems ott!!!

If they approve the colour - you might not have to bother repainting when you leave. They get fresher decor than when you moved in. I once lived in a room (a basement) where the previous tenant painted the ceiling BLOOD RED gloss with black coving... I think LLs are a bit scared of the psychos out there, if it's fairly inoffensive it might be in your interests to get it approved.
  • We had to ask before putting pictures up and if we wanted to paint we have to ask too- I think as the poster above says LL's are scared of 'bright' colour schemes which they might have to pay to rectify.

I had to take the goth psycho room as it was an unseen choice in a university accommodation ballot as was the only one left in the house with my mates - if I'd have seen it I'd have probably lived with some other people, but you can see the LLs point even if you offer to redecorate it might put prospective tenants off viewing in the future if you were planning to decorate your daughter's room in bright red, the odd swastika insignia perhaps some skulls... there are some people with really vile tastes and they are often the keenest to unleash their creativity on the world....

BTW get their consent IN WRITING - a verbal agreement means nothing if there's ever a misunderstanding - the LL may say the LA was confused or vice versa or both deny all knowledge and letting agent staff turnover is high so they person saying yes may be long gone replaced by someone relying on an inventory when you leave...

LOL Thanks for the replies, I see your point of view,

I wouldnt let her paint it any sort of Goth colour,

Good luck Neff. As a LL I wouldn't mind a tenant painting a room a different colour, though I would lay down rules as to the shade now. This is a result of a previous tenant painting every room in a thatched cottage dark reds, purples, blues and yellows, including the window frames inside!!!!! It tooks weeks to put it right when they moved out, as 2 coats of white didn't cover properly at first. Never again. Pastel shades are fine by me on walls, but the windows stay white.

I think it's perfectly reasonable. How do they know you aren't going to hack messy holes in the wall, or get paint splattered over the fittings/furniture, or like others have said, paint it some terrible colour that will put future tenants off.

We weren't allowed to use blu-tak in our last place, which seems petty but blu-tak does actually leave greasy marks on the wall which they would have had to pay to paint over.

It's all about how much it will cost to get it back to how it looked when you moved in.
