Any advice for parking in leeds? I'm off there this weekend...but might just catch the train
  • In Leeds, the car park at the International Pool is free and is about a 10 min walk to get into the shopping bit.

Access it through Little Queen Street, as the car park on the other side looks a tad dodgy!

  • M6 on a Friday afternoon. I believe all lanes contain parked cars.

Central London (Shaftesbury Avenue - Near Piccadilly Circus Tube Station):

A number of years back I used to park in the NCP Soho carpark (just off Shaftesbury Avenue) for FREE in the evenings (6pm onwards) & at the weekends.

This is how it worked. I'm a member of the Golden Nugget Casino on Shaftesbury Avenue (back then I paid £10 for lifetime membership, think now it's free for membership).

Back to the Free parking method, once I had parked up I'd pop into the casino & give in my NSP parking ticket at reception. When I left the casino I would pick up the ticket from reception (which would have been stamped) & I was then free to do as I please.

It did not matter how long I was in the casino, be it 2 hours or 2 minutes, on leaving I would pick up my stamped NCP ticket. About 90% of the time I was in the casino for less than 10 minutes, just to get the ticket stamped & then I would be off clubbing it until the early hours knowing that my car was safe & sound in the carpark & it will not have cost me anything for parking ;)

I used this method for many years. Have not used it for a while now as I'm getting a bit too old to be clubbing :( and usually when I go into central London now I like to have a good drink so the car stays at home.

If anyone is interested in trying this out now to see is it still works (which I'm sure it does), simply call the Golden Nugget Casino, tell them you are interested in becoming a member & would like to know the parking arrangements for members :)

London - Friday after 6 and all day Saturday and Sunday.
Parking behind the Rubens hotel near Buckingham Palace.
  • Leeds - You can always park in 'Crown Point' which is about a 5-10 minute walk into the City Centre.
I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!

    Canterbury

Unfortunately, parking spaces are extremely limited in the city...Canterbury is surrounded by an old wall, so there is very limited space to develop within the city walls. Therefore you are forced to use the council-owned car parks, which run at extortionate rates and are usually a good 10 minutes walk away from the high street. However - I have 2 big tips:

    1. If you are planning on going into the city in the evening, aim to get there *after* 7pm. At 7pm all of the car parks in the city charge a flat rate of £1 for 12 hours of parking. This is particularly worth noting if you plan on visiting the famous Marlowe Theatre - most performances start between 7.15 and 7.30 and the car park is less than 100m away from the building.

    2. All of the car parks use the potentially-expensive pay-up-front method of car park metering - ie. you never know how long you are going to stay and as the car parks tend to be out of reasonable walking distance from the shops, you end up pumping in more money than you'll ever use. But there is now ONE EXCEPTION to this rule - the newly built "Whitefriars" Car Park. Its situated on the ring road, near the bus station and is clearly marked around the city as "Whitefriars". Its a new multi-story car park, is the best situated of all the car parks in the city (literally above the high street) and by sheer coincidence is by far the cheapest. Its the kind of parking where you take a ticket as you enter the complex and then pay in a machine as you leave. This can work out a lot more cost-effective if you're not sure how long you're going to stay in the city...and even better, if you are planning on a "shooting visit", it only costs 60p for the first 30 minutes (which in comparison to the city's other car parks is unbelievably cheap - especially as you don't have to account for the extra walking time).

However its also worth noting that if you plan on visiting the city at the weekend or on a bank holiday, the Whitefriars car park is usually full by 9am, so set off early!!
