I had so many problems with the Halifax that i ended up moving to HSBC and what a mistake that was.

I had an overdraft facility on our joint account - my husband had problems paying his store cards etc as he came out of work so the CAB set us up being able to pay the card companies back at £1.00 each per month.

I set this up some by standing order other via direct debit.

Anyhow because one of the cards was my husbands credit card HSBC stopped the overdraft on the exact day that 4 £1.00 Direct debits were due out (they said they sent a letter about it but i never received one).

What happened - they charges me £30.00 for each failed Direct debit so i ended up with a £120 bill for £4.00 worth od Direct debits.

Needless to say i have had many an argument over this but they won't budge.

So i opened an account with the co-op and they have a £10.00 lee-way on going over.

I would have threatened them with small claims court, as per the "illegal bank charges" thread! Also, sometimes it takes more than just one letter to get the problem fixed. If it takes 4 letters and 1 hour to write each, its still time well spent for £120 back!!!

    Hello,
I'm new and wondered if anyone can help me. I exceeded my overdraft limit by 38p, when I realised this I immediately went to the bank and paid £20 in which the nice lady led me to believe would mean I'd incur no charges as I'd only been overdrawn for 4hours. Today I recieved a letter telling me £30 would be taken out of my account next week, the same nice lady then informed my I must have misunderstood her. Is there anything I can do?? Help Me Please

The Halifax did this to me once. I rang them and explained my mistake and asked if they would waive the charge. Because I had never done it before they waived it immediately. I would certainly ring them and ask.

Thank you guys. I've compiled a letter though wondered whether it is best to send it to my branch or go for a head honcho, if so how does one track down a head honcho, is it easier to find an e-mail address??
The bank in question is Halifax!!

in all seriousness, threaten to charge the bank for your inconvenience!!! my friend has done it before and all the bank charges were waived....they'll soon back down!

  • I'm sure my halifax account has a £5 buffer - i suppose it depends on type of account?
