At About 6:15pm On The Six Oclock News On Radio 4, Charlotte Green Said "a Few Minutes Ago The Dow Jones Index Was Down 80 Points".
This Is Completely And Utterly Factually Incorrect. The Dow Jones Is Closed To Today Because Of A National Holiday (presidents Day) And They Just Repeated Fridays Information !!!!!!!!!!!
I Have Known Itv News At Ten, Newsnight And Radio 4 Do This For Years (get The Dow Jones Wrong When There Is A National Holiday) And They Still Cant Get Get It Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Supposing Someone Made An Investment Decision That Went Wrong Based On This False Information - I Would Have Thought The Bbc Could Be Sued For Damages.

I like your particular brand of enraged typing. Most people, when annoyed, go for flat out CAPS THROUGHOUT! GOD I AM SO ANGRY. But you have gone for the rather quaint and civilised, Capitalising The Start Of Every Word.
Fair play to you.
But yes, it's a pretty dumb mistake on their point.0 -

Thats what happens if you input all caps and it comes out initial caps.
Anway it really annoys me. The Radio 4 news readers are highly paid and often well over qualified with degrees in politics and knowing about 4 languages yet they come up with this garbage.
I even remember Jeremy Paxman who earns around 800K per year and isnt exactly a moron, making this same blunder last year.0 -
I have gone off the news. Its all punctuated with opinions and agendas. You shouldnt expect them to report facts. Thats not what they do any more.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0

The Dow Jones Index ( and FTSE amongst others) are actually traded on other markets and did close today 85 points down. You can generally trade the Index virtually 24hrs a day and there is a correction when the real market opens. I presume this where the press get the 'the market is expected to open 45 points down' predictions. I only found this out as I am trading CFD's and got quite a shock when the indices kept fluctuating around the clock. HTH0

Thats the futures trade for the next days trading and not what the newsreaders picked up.0 -

One of the most senior, Eugene Sheehy, 54, the €1.7bn-a-year :shocked:chief executive of Allied Irish admitted on Thursday that bank pay in Ireland was out of control and went so far as to declare he thought his salary package would be frozen for the rest of his career. Non-executive directors on the boards of the two banks will have their fees cut by at least 25pc.

Even Mrs Rowling don't quite get that much a year...0 -
Going back to the OP's post, at midnight they (Radio 4 news) said it had been closed due to a Public Holiday.0

The most ludicrous thing is that on their own website it shows the last close as:
Fri 21:06 7850.41 -82.35 -1.04%
it seems that they don't even read or trust their own website as a source for information.

I think you will find that Newsreaders (or announcers who sometimes read the news) do not write it.
Charlotte Green has a degree in English and American Literature, not politics0
