It said on the news that the union had actually known about this for 3 months, but kept it quiet.
Mr. Scargill (junior) said "Oh yes we knew about it all along. Although we were unable to stop the losses or achieve a decent payoff we can still keep a secret. Fortunately the union has agreed to keep me on for as long as I can breathe".
  • I used to work for a firm that was owned by BMW and these agency staff would have been paid a good wage, they would have got shift allowance, plus they are on the same pay as normal staff.

Its a shame but it happens, thats why companys employ agency labour for a short term fix, for the upturn in sales.

The people who work for agencies know what can happen, if everyone turned round and said no to agency work these companies would have to take on full time workers.

But you turn round to anyone and say you can earn 15 pound a hour working weekends they will say yes, i know its bad but to get a run of 2 years is not bad, and being agency staff you should know one minute your there the next day your not.

I mean if in 6 months they start the weekend shift up again, how many of the people who got released today will go back, i suspect 80% would be staright back there, even knowing what happened this time.

Why Buy an over-priced house? If you have good investments it can pay for your Rent.

As I understand it all these agency workers would be directly employed by the agency and are entitled to the same conditions as any other employee ie holiday pay sick pay and redundancy.

This was brought in by some EU law i think.

Its not like in the eighties when they could pretend you were self employed pay you a pittance not pay ni or any other perks.

This was common in construction industry but was wiped out years ago.

So although they wont get anything from Bmw they should get something from the agency that employed them.

they get the same rate of pay but they dont get sick pay and they have to work for so long for the the agency before they get holiday pay, like you would working anyhwere

Ive seen it with my own eyes, you are entitled to a lot of things if you have been employed for 2 years, but these employers are not silly they lay them off for a week or 2 usually before a holiday to break up the two years.

They just keep on renewing the contracts monthly, or in worse cases weekly.

In the news it said some of them had been there for five or six years so if they took this to an industrial tribunal the agency wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Please dont get me wrong i am not sticking up for them i hate them with a vengeance they are parasites living off the backs of working people who only want to make a living.

The unions shouldn't be wingeing either, another useless bunch they should have been petitioning Bmw to take on full time employees but they are on the gravy train and dont want to help anyone but themselves.
Then when something like this happens they rant about big business etc they have done nothing as usual.

I stopped paying my subs years ago a complete waste of money.

I think the fact that the union knew what was happening months ahead of time and didn't warn the Agency staff, is disgusting.

That said, for the last few months anyone with any sense would have seen the way the wind was blowing in the car industry and should have started making contingency plans, such as reducing outgoings, looking at job or educational opportunities and starting a savings nest egg.
