There's also about 6 different shaes of purple edible glitter for cakes on ebay (about £2 + postage). Search for 'purple edible'
Would probably be easier to cover a white one on glitter than making the whole thing.....

Be very very careful. There is a company called edAble art which sells glitter for cake decorating. This is not to be used for any part which will be eaten. It's non-toxic but non edible. Lots of people spell the company name incorrectly, and thus cause problems. 'Magic sparkles' however are edible, and I believe come in a lilac colour. Design a cake stocks these.
There are rules regarding the use of food colouring on icing. There is a set amount of icing vs colour per kilo. The problem is, you have no way of knowing if you've exceeded this using food colouring. www.design-a-cake.co.uk is a fantastic site, you may be able to find ready coloured icing on there, which would be the way to go.
The lustre paint which comes in a spray doesn't come in purple as far as I'm aware. The pearl is very pretty though!
I would also suggest getting a book out from the library regarding how to cover a sponge cake, as there are a few steps you need to follow.

How about these shops? There does seem to be quite a few on Ebay and they are cheaper than the M&S Cakes and will personalise your cake to match your theme. I hope this helps and good luck!!!!:A :
