Looking for a cheapish cake maker
bluezone

Dear All,
I am busy getting things planned for the wedding and need to find a cake maker who is fairly cheap. I would like to have 2 sponge cakes, round and about 10inches in diameter - I would need these to be iced in deep purple icing. I have asked around but cant find anyone who would make them for less than £40 each  The thing is for the cake display I am having 5 cakes  but all small plain white iced supermarket fruit cakes and so I just wanted a couple of sponge ones.
I know I could attempt to make them myself but I want them to look good - I can make a mess of a boiled egg!
Does anyone have any ideas or recommend anyone/anywhere. I'm from the Cambridge area.
Many thanks in advance xx

Can't really help with your cake-maker question but Marks and Spencers do sponge wedding cakes which are delicious and reasonably priced.

Sorry I don't know how to do short links and that I can't answer your original question but hopefully someone will be along soon to help!

Would you consider just adding purple ribbon around them so you could get the M&S ones? How about asking if someone will re-ice the M&S ones? Some bakers are funny about health and safety if they're icing a cake they've not made, but wouldn't hurt to ask if your heart's set on purple icing....Love MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0

thanks for the replies, I shall enquire with Marks and Spencers to see if they would be able to make it. I am already having purple ribbon round the white cakes and with the way the display is I would really like it to be purple icing.
I might have a bash at trying it myself - I mean how hard can it be.......gulp 😁0 -
You can order them on the M&S website for instore collection.
Maybe you could mix up some red and blue food colouring and 'paint' it on??? I'm not very cook minded so don't know if this would work!
Or you could make/buy your own sponge and use this:

What about Wilton's food colour mist spray? They make it in several colours, It's less than £5 for a can. Then just spray the white M&S sponges purple, easy
Painting with food colouring will leave streaks and affect the texture of the icing (I'm pretty sure!) As well as putting LOTS of colouring on the outside of the cake to cover it all.

Now I'm on that website... oops. My CC will not like this.... haha...:rotfl:0 -
Cake spraypaint! I never knew you got such a thing (I don't bake that often lol!) that's a good idea as well Miss Liquorice!

I have a long suffering official cake-eater... ahem, I mean, boyfriend, who gets dragged around shops selling all of that kind of thing. If they make it for cakes, chances are I know about it, hehe Hope it helps somebody, best of luck with the wedding nat and bluezone

i made my own wedding cake - all four tiers!
i put different sized white daisies on mine, with a coloured centre - yellow in my case, to match my flowers and my ribbon! could you do this (purpel centre), perhaps with the m&s cake? if you're interested i could maybe try to find the details of the daisy cutters i used - they cost me about £4. gorgeous. and i was so proud when we cut the cake. lots of lovely positive comments!0 -
Thanks ainnoangel -
All 4 tiers!!! Blimey do you fancy making mine :rotfl:
Mum and I have already made the flowers to go on the top of the cake and I already have the ribbon. Am going to have a go at the weekend at making one and also try to phone M&S to see what they could do x😁0 -
like others have suggested you could decorate a marks and spencers cake yourself or ask a friend to decorate it and the venue may have a cake stand or you could buy a second hand one.
we had ours made by www.fancifulcakes.co.uk as did our friends (theirs is the football wedding cake!!)0
