Advised to buy the wrong product by Dell - do i have any comeback?

My partner bought me a new monitor from Dell in December and i decided that i wanted the new one to run alongside the old one and have two monitors on my PC.
I phoned Dell to ask what graphics card i would need to upgrade my pc to handle two monitors and the man told me that i didnt have to get a dell card i could get any card, in fact he looked on ebuyers website for me and gave me the product name / number of a suitable card.
I bought the card and it doesnt fit into my computer, it needs a pci express slot which my PC doesnt have, ebuyer wont exchange or refund on non-faulty products so where do i go from here?
Dell customer service just tell me there's nothing they can do as they dont offer compensation.

You say you bought a Dell Monitor, but is your PC a Dell too? When asking for a recommendation on a graphics card, did you tell them the make and model of the PC?
When you bought the graphics card, did you look at the requirements for it before purchasing? (i.e. Dell are on the end of a phone line, whereas you had the PC infront of you...)Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

Dell were on the phone telling me what cards were compatible on ebuyers website, i was looking at the same pages at the time on ebuyers website and they found the lowest price card for me that would do what i needed it to do, that was the one i bought and they assured me that it would work in my PC, again they knew the model and tag/serial number of my PC.
I was assuming that because the guy from Dell was telling me that this card would fit in my pc that it would. They misadvised me, does anyone know if i have any comeback on Dell for this?Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
As you weren't paying for the advice, didn't buy a card from them, and the advice was unconnected to a warranty fault, you won't be entitled to any compo.
I'm not sure on that, I would have thought as an employee of Dell he was representing them and Dell would be responsible for his actions.
However I'm not a solicitor etc
Your home insurance probably includes free legal advice, you could ring them for advice
It would be interesting to see an answer from someone who knows the law on this one as it is quite an unusual case.0 -

Don't the Distance Selling Regulations give the buyer a cooling off period?

If you have simply changed your mind about any item ordered and you wish to return it, then in line with the Distance Selling Regulations (DSR) you can do so provided you inform us of your decision within 10 days of receipt. The item must not be used and must be 'as new' when returned to us. Once you've informed us that you wish to return goods under the DSR, you have 28 calendar days to do so, at your own expense. Once the item is received at ebuyer.com, we'll issue a full refund for the product to your original payment method. Although Dell advised you wrongly, you have nothing in writing, and didn't pay for the advice, so not much come back there...
Your best bet would have been returning it to ebuyer. Any reason why it was left so late?
