There are loads of good museums that are free. Which ones to go to depends on your interests but the British Museum is probably the best, along with the Science Museum and the V&A. Make sure you get an Oyster card if you'll be travelling round as it's much cheaper than cash fares.

Greenwich is always good for a day out. The Observatory, Maritime Museum and Queens House are free. The Planetarium is about £6 per adult and is rather good. The park affords fabulous views over London and, if you don't fancy lunch in Greenwich, you can walk over over the common to Blackheath where there are various places to eat - including a Pizza Express for that old 2 for 1 voucher you can download from this very website. There is a nice market in Greenwich on weekends, incidentally. Quickest way to get there from central London is via overground train from either Charing Cross, Waterloo East or London Bridge, alighting at Greenwich. Alternatively you can get the DLR (Dockland Light Railway), alighting at "Cutty Sark" station. Also nice pubs overlooking the river. I like a pub lunch at the Cutty Sark Pub, but you need to get there early at the weekends to ensure a table.
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...
