Village Hotel Gym Club Membership

Dear All,

justa quick note to anyone who may be wishing to join the Health Club at any Village Hotel

http://www.village-hotels.co.uk

My wife and I joined their health club in Bury in january 2008 and signed up for a twelve month gym membership, so when january 2009 came along I decided not to renew our membership because I have just been made redundant.

However we both received letter this morning 16/2/2009 from the Accounts dept at the Village Hotel stating that

"If you wish to cancel your membership please be aware that you must provide the membership department with 1 full months calendar notice in writing" !!!!!

Am I thick or does signing up for a 12 month contract not mean exactly that, ie the contract runs for 12 months??

To make matters worse the letter also states that if you do not reply etc they will pass the overdue account onto a debt collector.

Has anyone else got any thoughts on this as at the time of signing up in january 2008 we were not informed that we had to provide notice to cancel a 12 month contract after the 12 months had run out?

Thanks, Villagekid.

  • It's probably a 12 month minimum contract, rather than a 12 month contract.

Some gyms require you to give 3 months notice I seem to recall.

Have you checked the T & Cs you agreed to?

I am a member with Village, at their new South Leeds branch, and I seem to remember from when we signed up about 6 months ago that it is indeed a minimum term of 1 year, and then 1 months notice to cancel!

Technically, does that mean though that you can cancel at month 11, giving one months notice, as then you would be a member for 1 year?

Yes, you should be able to write to them any time up to month 11, stating that you wish your contract to terminate at the end of your minimum 12 month period.

Don't forget to either send it recorded delivery, or hand deliver it (getting a receipt), as it's amazing how many gym membership cancellation letter just get "lost in the post"...!

1 month written notice is quite normal for gym memberships.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
