what are sainsburys insurance like?

i have a policy wiht them and we are having problems with the bathroom floor think water has escaped from the bath sides etc and making all of the floor rot and unsteady. they started saying to me that i need to get a builder to assess but then the other half knows about building and from the policy i can see it says "what is covered is Water escaping from fixed water installations" which i believe this is covered. any tips appreciated. thanks

The Sainsbury policy is underwritten by Halifax Insurance who can be a bit picky on claims sometimes in my experience.

This sounds like an Escape of Water Claim, in these cases Insurers will normally pay for the damage the water has done but not the repairs to the pipe itself. However if it has been leaking for a long time they sometimes try to not pay the claim under a clause.

If they do try this they will probably pay out if you have accidental damage cover.

Some Insurers include cover for "Trace and Access" this covers the damage done by say the plumber taking up the floors or tiles while they are trying to find the source of the leak. Unfortunately it does not look like your Policy has this cover but it would be worth you asking your Insurer if you have cover for Trace and Access.

Try and get a builder to provide a quotation to repair the damage excluding repairing the leak to the pipe.

The claim you describe is neccessarily normally known as an "Escape of Water" Claim as this normally means water escaping out of a pipe or tank eg the pipe bursting.

Water sloshing over the sides of the bath would not really come under Escape of Water so would be covered under Accidental Damage Cover which costs extra but covers a lot of the claims the rest of your policy does not cover.
