someone has told me that councils are buying houses back to get more housing for their very long waiting lists.
has anyone else heard this !!

I hope that you are right instead of the Councils Constantly wasting money on traffic calming measures .
Building them one year and removing them the other year just to get rid of there budget.
which is a scam that all councils use every year before the end of April.0 -
There've been rumours that they'll be getting a very good deal on unsold developments. As long as it's the amount most of them sold off their properties for HA for I'm in agreement - 1p per property sounds fair.
I think councils can force empty properties to be used - so if there's empty private houses near you investigate what the council can do.0 -

There have been a lot of people along the lines "I bought my council house, then I racked up loads of personal debt so am finding the mortgage expensive, will the council buy back my house at market value and let me stay living in it on a cheap rent/LHA/housing benefit"...
a plan that seems to not benefit the waiting lists....0 -
I suspect many people are on council waiting lists because they want cheap rents. When you know private rents are double council rents it shouldn't be a suprise that people want to get a council place.
Could we therefore achieve the same aim by reducing private rents to sensible levels?0 -
well that isnt me. and i do agree some people did run up debts, but perhaps some blame should be put on these mortgage companies that were helping people who obviously couldnt afford to buy their council houses get mortgages so they could make a nice little earner from horrendous arrangement fees etc.
i like to think of the whole story before making negative comments about people eg perhaps their parents werent good role models where money etc was concerned. we dont all get born with a silver spoon.!!!!!!
some people should go back to bed and get back out the right side.
i bought this house privately and i have no debt but am now divorcing so was looking for a way in which to sell the house quickly, so that i can get on with my life.0 -

Speak to local EAs - ask what price they think you could get a quick sale at.

I would imagine it was HAs rather than councils doing this but with best value practices etc I wouldn't imagine they'd be allowed to pay anything other than conservative market value and the idea of public sector and "quickly" sounds optimistic.... Try phoning local HAs as they'd have a better idea if local funding for this.0 -
I think it's very unlikely that Councils will be buying housing, unless they magically have "spare money" to do this. And there's not just the capital outlay, there's all the maintenance and other costs that LLs need to have a property available to let year after year.
I think this is an urban myth generated by those who think that this would be the best option to solve the problem of an insufficient supply of affordable housing - and affordable housing in the areas where it's needed most.
I don't fancy the increase in CT that would be required to suddenly turn my LA into a LL
