If you are buying them in advance, many invites will be large letter, if not due to the length/width, but due to the thickness by the time you've added pages about the reception directions, RSVP cards etc, let alone if it has ribbon on, just another way to get fleeced by the post office

use a courier then

My night time ones were ok but all the day ones had to go large letter coz they wouldn't fit through the slot. They didn't even look that think!Mummy to Thomas born April 27th 2010 8lb 5oz0 -

i work for royal mail.I'll try and help with any post questions

Well a courier at least wouldn't lose the mail...
When an elderly relative sent us a card recently, that was at most 1mm over the letter size postage in thickness, (but within the normal size limits, how was she supposed to know?) and it got sent to the delivery office, I had to pay £1.50 to collect it - ridiculous. I'm afraid I have had nothing but bad experiences with Royal Mail for many years, both as a consumer customer, and as a business customer. Their track and trace is woeful, 8 out of 10 times I use it, these is never a confirmation on line, I've complained many times, only if you stump up for "special delivery" does it work - paying to guarantee a delivery, ironic when you consider what first class was invented for...
Redirection services I use, fail constantly, I end up with other peoples mail, at least 4 complaints in the last 12 months. At least I get some books of stamps as an apology, but the cost of hanging on the phone for 30mins isn't worth my time.
Our postman is lovely - fantastic in fact. But as for the PO management and decision makers who have wasted millions of pounds (Consignia anyone?), go along with closing essential rural post offices, lose mail on a regular basis, etc well...

£1.50?
well it was more than 1mm over
a letter posted on a 1st class stamp on a large letter would incurr a 6p shortfall
if you paid £1.50 it was 50p short,hardly just over?0 -

Well I have the envelope here, there is a handling fee and collection fee, totalled £1.50, I complained at the desk and was told it was the standard fee. I measured the envelope and wrote a complaint to Royal Mail.
It certainly was not more than 6mm, but this as you know is over the 5mm, the envelope was 220 x 150mm.
So yes it was just over. Don't tell me, RM c0cked it up again, what a surprise.
I remain utterly unimpressed with their service over a long period.0
