The way this works is if you buy stamps that say 1st or 2nd etc. This will mean that you have made a saving and the post office have to rely on the fact that people will need stamps again, so the price rise will work slower. You will not be a few pence off the price of posting a letter with the "older" stamps.
I used 2nd class for our invitations, we made sure they fitted in this section. It saved us quite a bit of money and everyone got their invites.

If you are buying them in advance, many invites will be large letter, if not due to the length/width, but due to the thickness by the time you've added pages about the reception directions, RSVP cards etc, let alone if it has ribbon on, just another way to get fleeced by the post office
