Adult breaks for Easter in North UK

So, the boyfriend and I are considering going away for the Easter bankholiday. It's just us, so we don't need somewhere so kid-friendly, and we don't mind so much places being cold or wet as long as they're pretty. (We're into photography - if we can run around with our cameras, we pretty much have a good time regardless).

We're in the North, and as it will only be for three nights, not looking to go too far. Scotland, Yorkshire, Lake District - all these are good, but we don't really want the drive to the South:-) We're also looking for cheap and cheerful - a caravan would be fine.

Where would I search for this? Places like lastminute.com seem to focus on holidays abroad and in London, and other places seem to focus on families with kids. Where do I start looking?

  • We are also a couple, looking for somewhere to go in the UK, this time by train from London.

My likes are modern accommodation (no run-down hotels from the 60th or worse), good food, physical activity (walks will do if nothing else)...

.... and of course not breaking the bank....!

    Anyone out there with suggestions?

We have a holiday home we let when we are not there, we are in France over Easter. https://www.trenthouselets.com is our (amateur) website. It is overlooking the river Trent on the Lincs/Nots border. Lots of walks and photo opportunities. Very well equipped and broadband now included in the rental. Please contact me by PM for more if you are interested. We would give a discount for a couple.

I think you could jump one of two ways:
the 'Warner' route, where everything is laid on for you (in fact I dare say some of them do photography courses too). The hotels are usually architecturally interesting, clean and well furnished (although I found it a little be too 'school dinner-ish' in the dining room for my taste - but that was over 5 years ago, so they may have improved!

Alternatively, the DIY-route where you could rent a cottage somewhere cosy for two, within countryside worthy of photographing. Two sites I like to check out prior to booking a cottage:
www.mycottageholiday.co.uk and www.therealvisitorsbook.co.uk who also have a page devoted to cottages for 'grown ups'
