Help!! Reclaiming dormant account

Hi,
i was wondering if anyone can help - I have an account that was opened for me by a godparent when I was born. THe family are no longer in touch with him, nor do we even know if he is still in Uk or not.
I am now many years older(!) and have tried in the past to access the account but have been told without his death certificate or signature then I cannot access the money, despite my age.
Any ideas if there is any way that I can access this account. It's not a fortune but it all helps.
Many thanks.

    From http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/reclaim-lost-assets-free#relatives ....

"If a bank/ building society can't agree on the validity of your claim you have the right to appeal internally through the bank and then, if still unsuccessful, to refer your complaint to the independent arbiter, the Financial Ombudsman Service."

Might be wworth a try ??

Can you tell us more about the account? Was it set up in your name or his? Is it a trust account with him as the executor? If so there is normally a predetermined age when you gain control of it.
  • Looking at the statement, the account is in his name re. myself - that is all i can tell.

He should have set it up in trust for you but he has not. If it is in his name re yours then (if I remember this right) it is purely his account and it has nothing legally to do with you. It's like if I set up a savings account for "Reaper re holiday fund". I'm not commited to spend that money on a holiday.

I think you need to track him down if you want to get hold of the money.
