Holiday payment

Hi all. I learn't something new yesterday and was shocked so I thought I would see if I have def. got it right and would like to share...

Buying a holiday through a travel agent is NOT protected using a credit card under section 75 over £100 spend.

You have no cover because perchase from third parties are excluded
ie travel agent, paypal.etc...

You should have ATOL protection for a package holiday anyway.

So...the £6.75 I payed out to use my visa card for the added protection incase ---- was not very MSE. If I used my debet card there would have been no charge.

I have paid £1 per person extra on the package holiday for Alot protection, but I thought using visa was to be extra safe?

Any replies read with thanks...

  • Hiya

Im not sure on the stance of section 75 with travel agents:confused: Is it just not a case of when ATOL cover is in place you cant use section 75?
I recently paid £20 extra to pay by mastercard for my flights:eek: (via Flythomascook) But seen this worthwhile as knew there was no protection when buying just flights.

But see no point in paying by CC if ATOL protection is already in place? Its not if your gonna get paid twice

    Sorry not helped much!

There aree some travel insurance policies that now include cover for cancellation if your travel provider eg airline or accomadation provider eg hotel go bust.

You would probably save money by using them for your travel insurance
  • Hi
If the travel agent is ABTA bonded your holiday will be protected if the Travel Agent fails or if the Tour Operator fails. You credit card would not give you any additional protection. I would think the £6.75 extra you paid to use the card is to cover the charges that the card company make to the travel agent, The £1 ATOL fee goes into a `pot' that the CAA use to protect you against the financial of the airline or the tour operator. In most cases if you book the flight direct with a airline you would not receive ATOL or ABTA protection so if the flights are over £100 it would be better to use a credit card instead of a debit card.

Hi again, I can see I wasted my £6.75 and will not do so on a future TC package holiday.

Sorry Leigh Ann to use you as an example but.....has Leigh ann also wasted her £20 going through fly TC. and also using a third party ie. travel agent?

I hope a mse has the answer? and we are being savvi spenders.

I can recomend Direct Line travel insurance for having insurance for the flight/ company going bust thing if you take out there top cover.

  • If you pay by credit card for an ATOL bonded holiday you are 'double bonding' without twice the benefits.

Quite simply if your holiday is ATOL bonded pay by debit card or cheque, whichever doesn't incur charges - credit cards do because of the high merchant charges applied by credit card companies, you're not getting extra payments.

If it's ATOL bonded you will get your money back one way or another, so why pay more?
