Redundancy for young mum

My daughter may soon be made redundant. As she has small children she pays for child care for the days she works p/t. With no income she won't be able to afford childcare, so can she sign on for contribution-based JSA, as actually she doesn't see how she can be available for work. Is she a single parent? She'll be on income support if she is.
  • No, her husband earns a decent salary.

I'm not sure i understand your question in that case.

She would be considered as available for work and depending on how decent her husband's salary is, she'll almost certainly be entitled to help towards childcare costs via tax credits once she is working. The job centre also have certain schemes where they will help fund childcare in the week leading up to starting a new job.

If she wasnt working she wouldnt need to pay for child care, would she,
she would be there to look after them. I dont understand your post really especially when you say the childrens father earns a decent salary.

How many hours of work would she be looking for?
Has she been working and paying NI contributions over the past couple of years?

As far as I can see, she accepts that while not working she will be looking after the children at home. The issue is not that childcare isn't paid for, it's that she is worried that if she is looking after her children she is not 'available for work' and therefore cannot sign on.

If she isn't available for work she can't sign on. JSA is paid to those who available for and actively seeking work.
  • Thanks for your replies. Maybe I didn't word it very well.
It's a vicious circle. If she is not earning, she can't afford to continue with nursery for the children. If she hasn't got childcare she is not able to be available for work, so can't sign on for JSA. I can't see a way round this.
She won't be eligible for Income Support because of her husband's earnings.
I reckon they can get higher rate of Working and Child Tax Credits though.

Why can't she be available for future work? Surely applying for jobs can be done with a kid in tow (writing application letters/looking for things to apply for) and her husband could take a few hours of annual leave whilst she went for interviews. Jobs don't demand you start the next day so childcare could be arranged at that point.
