Log Burner....

I have decided I want a log burner, I currently have 2 adjourning rooms, a living room and a dining room, i have knocked out where the fireplaces were blocked up many moons ago and now have two fireplaces back to back with there own flues from when the house was built, I would like to stick in a lintel or 2 and knock the 2 openings into 1 so as to see through the fireplaces from front to back, I am then planning on using some sort of fireline board to board out the resulting hole and then get in a qualified fitter to fit a double sided log burner into the middle of the fireplaces cap of one of the flues and line the one that is in the best condition with a steel liner for the new burner and put in a register plate and cowel the pots and certifiate the lot.....my questions are am i missing anything, can it be done, will it take less than 100 years to pay for it self in saved gas heating ;-) any advice greatly recieved...

Just had a multifuel stove fitted - it's fab! From your list it looks like you have covered everything. We had a HETAS (solid fuel version of corgi fitters) engineer out and they gave lots of good advice and told us everything we would need to do to have the stove signed off by them. With regards to cost - it isn't cheap in the short term but we have already cut right back on our heating - leave the doors open and the heat gets to the whole house. Another tip - check with your local wood yard. We could buy logs for £13 for a cage or offcuts for £4 a cage, as soon as they are burning you don't notice what the bits look like! Good luck!0
