prom dress

Options
my daughter wants a prom dress for her leaving prom at school. does anyone know where is the best place to get one that doesn't cost a small fortune. Alot of her friends have been to wedding shops and spent about £250!!!!!!! I was hoping to get her a dress for less than £100. I have been to Debenhams but she is frightened that someone else will turn up in the same dress as her and she wasn't particularly impressed with anything there. Any help would be much appreciated. I hate the fact that schools put parents under this pressure - what happened to the good old end of year school disco!!!

  • Try TKMAXX - they always have lots of sparkly evening dresses aimed at that age group. They are all prices but it's the best place for a bargain!
NO EXCUSES - THIS YEAR IT'S PERSONAL..........

I recommend looking out for a coast dress on ebay - go to a Coast store first and try on some dresses and different styles and decide what fits and flatters, then try looking on ebay.

Coast is very consistent in their sizing and styling - they often repeat the same style over a number of seasons with different colours/slightly different designs. You can get a lot of brand new Coast dresses on ebay, for a lot less than store prices, especially if they are one or two seasons old - in which case i think it's a very safe bet that no one else at the prom will have the same dress, as who plans ahead at that age?!

(I've got a few Coast dresses, as I love the style and quality, and a couple have been bought from ebay with no issues whatsoever)

The idea of Coast dresses on ebay is good, you could also look for Monsoon dresses, they have some beauties but I think in the shop they are usually more than £100. Try House of Fraser if you've got one near you, I got mine there for £70 down from about £200 I think.

  • I was really prepared for my proms in yr11 and yr 13. My yr11 prom dress was £12 from a charity shop and my yr13 dress was bought in the January sales for £16 from Jane Norman.

Buying the dresses months in advance also meant that I didn't turn up in the same dress as my friends. About 10 people were wearing the same dress from Debenhams in various colours:eek:

It may be worth trying Warehouse, Jane Norman, Oasis, etc sale rails for bargins.

  • Was in TK Maxx last night for the prom dress and their selection was very poor so might be a bit early. Would be wary of Monsoon for the same reason as Debenhams. Have heard of several people turning up with same dress especially as they do a wider ranges of sizes. What about going to a dress maker and getting different material like a traditional prom style but not in satin.

    How about this:

You may find some gorgeous dresses in lovely colours (I'm thinking of the more non-traditional wedding dresses). Maybe worth a trip if they are near you.

I know someone who bought a bridesmaids dress (from ebay) from a wedding shop - for her prom.

    Best of luck.
