It takes two to tango - in this case the lenders for creeping the limits up and us for asking for an increase (or not demanding our limit stays as is).

When I was a student nurse on £600 a month I ended up with an overdraft of £2600. Yes they kept creeping it up but only cos I kept asking them too. The problem arose when they wrote saying they were reviewing accounts and could they have their £2600 back please!

Nobody forces anyone to smoke, but cigarettes are legal, addictive and very bad for you. Should the cigarette companies shoulder any of the blame for the misery they cause?

I suggest that if it was a relative of yours who was dying from cancer you would think that cigarette companies were very much to blame.

Nope. Personal choice which is one of the marvellous freedoms of living in our society.

Is it worth writing to these creditors to accuse them of irresponsible lending?

If you do, you will only come across as someone who is trying to pass the buck instead of someone who is genuinely trying to sort their problems out. I don't think you would get much help going down that route, imo.

Many of us who are drowning in debt likewise believe that the companies that have fuelled our addiction are at least partly responsible.

I think you are comparing apples and pears. (Possibly carcinogenic) physical changes in your body caused by a smoking addiction is hardly the same thing as someone who just wants to spend. If you're not confident you are a strong swimmer, then why go down to the deep end? ;) 'Drowning in debt' usually doesn't happen overnight and people will have had the chance to head back to the shallow end where they can cope better. If they don't and they continue in the same spending manner without heeding the warning signs, then hell mend them.

Anyway, anyone who suffers from any addiction has to accept responsibility for their own weaknesses. There is no blame to be shared when a person simply can't say 'no'.

I think I'm correct in saying most if not all companies will write to tell you they have increased your limit and to contact them if you would prefer this not to happen.

Even if this was not the case, I'm sure there was ample opportunity for the OP's wife to contact the cc company herself about her limit?

Sorry OP, I do have sympathy for the situation.......but passing the buck or sharing the blame is just not on, imo.

You're far from the only person who has ever found themselves in this position but most folk will buckle down and get on with it, learning an important lesson in the process (and that's not how to shift blame).

  • Talk about opening a can of worms. All points taken on board. People are so touchy! I requested advise, not a lecture or patronising(burbs)!

I think a line should now be drawn under this subject as it has obviously hit a raw nerve.
  • You haven't been patronised you simply don't like the answers you were given which presumably is why you would like the thread to stop - it time we all faced the fact that UK is the only country in the world with £1,000,000,000,000 of personal debt our banks are not regulated very differently from others but for some reason spending has gone completly out of control but it has become an addiction or is blamed on reckless lending it neither it our fault we are in debt and its up to us to get ourselves out of it

A relative of mine dying from cancer and someone who cannot stop themselves from spending are 2 completly different scenarios. How can you try and compare the two?

You are drowning in debt and you blame the credit companies? What a joke, get a grip of yourself. Go and see a debt advisor and sort yourself out instead of whining about these scum that give you cards.

Im just off down the shop to spend a few quid on the plastic now, i need the daily fix!!!!

You requested people to advise you on a subject that affects all of us, not just your wife. You expected people to egg you on to compain against these banks and companies who give us credit. Write to them, do a march outside their offices if it floats your boat, it doesnt make the slightest difference. You borrow you pay back.

If you had come on asking for advice on how to get the debts down, where you could cut back or where you could transfer debts too in order to cut out interest and the like then everybody on the board, including myself would have given you the best of our knowledge. You want to spend to your hearts content and then get the debt wiped out by moaning about it, not going to happen im afraid.

  • We give an answer you don't like and then we're touchy?
In fact I found it patronsing the way you thought a line should be drawn under it as you didn't get the 'correct' reply.
Ok, write to the bank and tell 'em they're responsible, you got our opinions and didn't like them, go tell it to the bank.
