Using Fabric Conditioner...

Got told last night that if you stop using fabric condiitoner on your clothes and in particular your white undies and bras - it stops them going grey and manky. Does any one know if this is true? I love my clothes to smell fresh and clean but stopping using fabric conditioner could be seriously money saving all round!

There are all sorts of threads on Fabric Conditioner in the Save Zillions on Cleaning Index and more listed in the cleaning section of the MEGA Index.

They may not have the exact answer for you but will certainly give you several options for alternatives to try out.

  • I've not used fabric conditioner for about 5 years. Not since I had a lovely Ralph Lauren (OK, OK not OS!!!!!!!!!) shirt disintegrate beneath the iron - the fibres just disappeared

I always wash "nice" underwear by hand, never use FC, drip dry ..... condition is perfect and no grey. I think greying is as much to do with the temperature you wash at, as it is with the FC. I think too high a temperature reacts with the "brighteners" that they put in washing powder - that's why I only use pure soap flakes and wash by hand.

There's enough fragrance in the average soap powder to make your clothes smell fresh. Either that, or hang them outside to "air".

I don't miss fabric conditioner at all - and we all managed without it, before it was invented as another way to have us waste money

Well, those of us old enough did .. in your case, it was probably your mum who managed :D

I stopped using fabric softner as the first OS change I made - converted to vinegar / bicarb / water mix instead. First thing I noticed - clothes still soft and nice smelling (usually of the washing powder), washing machine powder drawer gradually lost ALL the black gunge that covers the area where the conditioner goes, and also whites are whiter. I bought white cotton bras in October / November and there's no sign of greying at all. In fact - I bought another identical set a couple of weeks ago and cant tell the new ones and the old ones apart.

    Ditch the conditioner!!
I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle

My Mum's washing ALWAYS smells divine - I dunno what she does, but I can't get mine to smell as nice. I think it is a Mum thing - all my friends say the same!!! HAHA

Bet she dries it outside in the fresh air. The other GREAT fabric softener is rain - honest. It's soft water ...... which is really what FC is. Fragrance and water softeners!

  • Apparently FC is really bad for towels as well - stops them being absorbent - so there's another reason not to use it. I don't but that's partly due to meaness and partly due to ds2's eczema

She does! She's never too bothered if its starts raining! She is always right... :D

Thanks everyone - I'm a convert: better skin, better clothes, the laundry smells nice and you save money! Thank you :j

I only use conditioner on man made fibres to reduce static, is there an OS alternative?
