Has anyone used an egg coddler?

I've found a thread about what an egg coddler is, but there doesn't seem to be any advice about using one.
I got a lovely Royal Worcester one for £1.25 from a charity shop (list price £15.50!) and have just tried to use it. I put a bit of butter in the bottom and broke my egg into it, then screwed the lid back on and stood it in boiling water. It made a lot of noise rattling around, but when I opened it after about 20 minutes the egg white was still quite raw, and the yolk just soft.
I had to tip it into a pyrex lid and finish it off in the microwave, where it promptly exploded even though I used the defrost setting .
Does anyone have any success with these things? What are the tricks to ensure a good result?

Thank you, that's interesting. It looks like I did everything right, so perhaps I should have just left it in the pan a bit longer.
I might stick to scrambled or boiled in future, and keep my coddler as an ornament!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I don't know how big yours are but mine was only just big enough for the (granted, large) egg! I wouldn't grate too much cheese or chop too much bacon until you've given it a test run!

10/10 for the egg coddler.
I checked how it was cooking after 5 minutes and gave it another minute or 2 and it was lovely. Stayed pipinghot all the way through. A nice litttle treat.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.
