Removals Firms...

OK so we might actually be moving...

We are making a long distance move, potential overnight delay - with LOTS of stuff, Not a lot of furniture to be honest, but what there is is B I G and there are a lot of books, china, a couple of chandeliers, an upright piano, some heavy garden statues/pots, and the entire contents of OH's Joinery workshop which is currently stored in the cellar. He's got a big bench (which comes apart) Pillar drill, lathes, saw benches...BIG stuff plus lots of hand tools etc. We told all three people we asked to quote that we would move it to a back downstairs room (ie we didn't expect them to haul it from the cellar)

The two guys who came (Simpsons, and Chappels) both gave me a warm cosy feeling that their firms could hack the move... They were talking 2000Cubic Feet, 18CWT Lorries, Trailers, getting workshop out first....

The girl from Pickfords, what my gran would have called a slip of a girl ....went down the garden in her pointy stillettos then down into the cellar, took one look at OH's stuff in down there and said she'd have to get her manager in to do a health and safety check, as the men might refuse to move it on the day.

I basically said to OH that Pickfords wouldn't get the job, as I'd not risk them turning up on the day and refusing to move his stuff.

Well the quotes have come in - the first two guys came in with a similar £4000 Pickfords? £1400. It's not a no brainer (cos I don't think it's right  ) but I've never ever done a move before that wasn't a man and a van so whaddaya think??? Prices? Pickfords??

OH says we can't afford to loose £££ as we've taken a massive drop in the house price to make the move happen, and I SAY do you want it to all arrive there or not? OH wonders if in these hard times Pickfords are massively undercutting the opposition to get the work??

Regards

Kate

Not in Birmingham, but close - we used Newton's removals, and it was 120 miles move one way. They came and packed all on Wednesday, loaded the van, locked up the house and I met them up North on Thursday morning, were they unloaded everything. It was a 3-bed semi, but rather a lot of stuff. The Luton van was so full, I was querying that they are moving someone else at the same time!!!!

The cost was about £700, if I remember correctly, in May - June 2008.
    Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb
