Internal Doors dilemma

Another dilemma.

Is it cheaper to but my own internal doors and contact a joiner to fit them or should i get a joiner to supply and fit?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

  • I would get them to supply and fit, I think most tradesmen prefer to use products they know are good quality and which wont cause them any unnecesary problems fitting. It also saves you a trip out with a van/estate car to collect the doors.

Thanks for that, I hadnt thought about how to get the doors home........

Anyone have any idea how much it will cost me to get 3 internal (bedroom) doors fitted. Simple 4/6 panel primed internal doors, standard size and simple fittings??

labour is about 50 quid per door. then the price of a door/s plus any fittings.
that should give you a budget price.

door prices vary a lot against the quality required.
beware that some chippys wont fit cheap doors/products. my BIL certainly wont.
    Get some gorm.

Some builders charge a lot more for supply than the door actually costs so when you get quotes, ask them to seperate parts and labour.
  • We got some fire doors from Wickes and over £45 you get free delivery. Doors are standard size and decent quality. Doors cost us £30 and then you have a packing charge of £5 per door. It actually worked out cheaper than Jewsons and a lot less hassle - Fire doors are heavy and a bit of a pain to lift onto roof bars.

Our chippy charges £18 per hour and we are on the south coast. He fitted a fire door and supplied hinges and latch and also fitted our own handles on 7 doors in total.

He charged £90 for all that as the handles wern't as straight forward to fit as hoped!!

I had 8 fire doors fitted as part of my loft conversion. It took two guys two days to do it. I don't know how much it cost exactly as it was part of the loft quote but it was in the region of £1,500.

I replaced four internal doors (three glazed and a plain) bought from Wickes. I paid about £180 for the doors excluding furniture. They fitted in my car so no delivery costs.

It took me (a relative novice) about two hours a door to fit them as they all needed some 'fettling' and, of course, the holes for the mechanisms and hinges chiselling out etc. I didn't rush.

I wouldn't dream of paying someone to do this job.

    Thanks Guys
In the end I did the work myself. Bought the doors locally for £30 each and got the shop to cut them to size (for free). I bought a decent chisel and new drill bits and set away myself - took a few hours for the first one but its perfect and the rest were less time again.
    Thanks for the advice folks.

    Hi Kandipandi
We're also thinking of fitting new internal doors (5) and was wondering where you got your doors from as ours would need cutting to size too (and i didn't know companies did this). Would you mind sharing?
    Thanks

I paid about £25 per door to be fitted. It is more work having to match up existing hinge and lock spacings than if the doors are fitted into an uncut door frame. The fourteen doors( some were for cupboards) came from B&Q and were not particularly expensive. This was probably five years ago. The job was done in about 1 1/2 days.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
