Need Carpets and Fitting

I have just been to a high street carpet shop and wondered if it is better to get a carpet from them and get them to fit it (£2.50/m2 + £30 delivery) or to contact a carpet fitter direct and get him to do it, or get him to supply and fit the carpets?
Im confused as to which would be the cheapest/best way to do it?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I'm in the same boat as you - would vinyl flooring be cheaper?0

Do you have any local independent carpet shops you could check out rather than the high street/nationals.
Ours has better carpet, cheaper and the cost of underlay (good quality Cloud 9), gripper, and fitting is included in the price. They don't charge for delivery either. (By local, ours is about 25 miles away, we live in a fairly rural area.)0 -
Thats a good idea thanks - i guess the answer is to contact an independant and a carpet fitter and get quotes. You can stand there and agonize........

First trip could be to a Carpet Wholesaler, which is to where the carpet fitters will go to buy their underlay, gripper, adhesives and other stuff.
Ask around for the names and contacts details of some good fitters. Then take it from there.
o bear in mind that these guys might save you a good few quid but do take care in your dealings with them, just in case you need to have them back to deal with some kind of a complaint. eg, bubbling vinyl, or carpet coming loose and/or wanting re-stretching.
And of course they might want a deposit and if you pay this by cheque or by cash and they disappear on you, you won't have your friendly credit card company available to re-imburse your lost deposit.0 -
hello I am a carpet fitter if the shops own fitters are fitting there is usually no charge for delivery and certainly no more than £10 haggle with them to get the delivery charge down £2.50 per mtr is good price for fitting but make sure the room is cleared for them and old carpet is taken up or they will charge for that0

In your area are you not able to shop around more to see if you can find a shop with free fitting? I recently needed new carpet for the stairs & bedrooms of my house & managed to find a couple of places offering free fitting & there was no charge for delivery. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Thanks guys - I will check round - I am new to the area I live in so its difficult getting recommendations for reliable/ good fitters. You can stand there and agonize........

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE FITTING, REPEAT...THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE FITTING!!!
If the carpet is advertised as 'Free Fitting', 'Free underlay', 'Free Grippers' etc etc, then I can 99.9% confirm the price has been built into your invoice somewhere! There is no such thing as a free-lunch...
If a carpet has been advertised as 50% off.....rubbish! Legally, if a retailer wishes to sell something at half price, they must sell the product at full-price in a percentage of their outlets for a minimum of 4 weeks. To get round this, they simply double the price of the product in their INVERNESS shop for a month, allowing them to promote the product as HALF PRICE everywhere else....Scandal!
Retailers make massive, massive profits on the underlay and gripperrods, so it is probably in there somewhere. At trade, 500ft of standard gripper sells for approx: £21.30. Door plates sell for around £1.48. Domestic underlay is bought from between £10-40 per 15m2 roll, dependent on quality...
£2 for a stick of gripper?
£4.99 per door plate?
Underlay £9.99 a yard? Get lost!!!!
My suggestion is to get your underlay, grips etc from an online underlay shop (Which will cost you around 50% less than from the retailer), buy your carpet seperately, and arrange your own fitting!Profit=sanity
Turnover=vanity
