What size deposit do people on here have?

I've got 1.2 million to spend on a big house, a smaller house by the sea and a boat.
As we've got no way of verifying whether people on here even have a deposit and aren't just 12 year olds living with their parents I thought I may as well give myself a good sum.
I suppose it depends what you have got 1.2 mil of (pennies?).'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
100% of a 2 bed terraced, 40% of what I would like to buy (3 bed detached), if prices fall another 20% over the next 3 years and I carry on saving around 1.2k per month I would be mortgage free on the above house.
However as I have stated here before I'm highly likely to be moving to Australia in that time, the houses there where I'm looking (near my daughter) are around £150k for a large 4 bed on at least an acre. I believe though these prices are likely to come down substancially over the next 3 years as Australia has had a similar bubble to ourselves over the past 8 years.
In fact the evidence suggests it's started to happen.
Ad, more than happy for you to tell me to p*ss off and mind my own business, but if you have a nice bit of cash saved up (I presume £80k+ if you could buy a two bed terrace) and your daughter is in Aus are you not tempted to just fly out there and live near her now? Is she grown up? I know if I had a kid I wouldn't really be that bothered about house prices, I'd probably just want to be with them as they were growing up.
As I say, none of my business really, and I know jobs and other bits of life get in the way of plans. But was just curious and hope I haven't offended, as that wasn't my intention.0 -
I get the impression this thread was created to prove a point and it appears the point has been proved albeit not in the favour of the OP. Lots of people out there with big deposits, and the reason being mainly due to them refraining from entering into the housing bubble over the last couple of years. Good things come to those who wait.0

Well, a house comes to those that wait. Not really the be all and end all though is it? Just somewhere to live. Not that I'm saying that it isn't fantastic that people have saved, but you know what I mean.0 -

Unfortunately I don't have 80k, terraced houses near me are going 50k, the other thing is, my 50k is based on me cashing in my investments 2.5 years early and losing quite a bit, which I don't want to do, as far as my daughter is concerned, she is nearly 5, I go out there twice a year and have a great relationship with her and my ex, she will be 7 when I plan to go, so aren't missing out much really and it will put me a great position when I get out there.
I've also promised her a 3 week holiday at Disney in Florida when she's 7, which she is really excited about, so I'm just being a slave to the grind for the next couple of years here:D, saving as much as possible to make the best of life out there.
Just to edit, no offense taken.:cool:0 -

What a rather lovely thing to do. You think closer to the time you'll be able to convince her that Vegas would be a better idea for both her and Daddy?
Cheers for the reply, I was just curious. Me and Mrs Cleaver have planned to emmigrate many a time but never fully gone through with it for one reason or another. Maybe one day. We really fancy Canada, not out of any real hatred for England, but just to try a new life in a new place.0 -

And I don`t blame you young `uns for it.`Spose I was about your age when I was offered a job in the USA. I was sales director for the UK office, a small operation for a largish US company. I did turn it down for family reasons but I often wonder what it might have been like.0 -

mmmmm, I'm tempted, but if I pull up at the MGM Grand and she says 'where's Mickey ?', the answer I will give her is likely to cause me much grief.:D0 -

We had an opportunity to go to the US three years ago but my Mum was terminally ill and I didn't want to spend the last few years away from her (although she was telling us to just get on with life and go). Although I'm very glad we made the decision not to go. It's often family that makes you think a bit harder about these things.
We don't ever plan to have kids, so I guess we can possibly live somewhere else at any point in life and not have to worry about disrupting a child's education or anything.0
