not sure about Insurance claim

insurance through RBS house Insurance and put in a claim for my laptop, fell on stairs with it and broke the screen. My problem is they put me through to a company called HomeServe who dealt with my claim,Homeserve said they would accept the claim and sent me out a card like a Credit card to the value they thought it would cost to replace the laptop. Only trouble is i can only use it in Dixons, Curry's or PC World and there is nothing there I like. My question is can I go back to Homeserve and said I would rather have a caheque for the amount so I can shop around. I would Appreciate some advice please

You can but if you ask for cash they will try and give you a reduced amount. There are threads on here that cover this as the ombudsman has ruled on these, have a read of this link to see if it applies to you.

RBS tried to knock £100 off my settlement figure because I insisted on cash so I could shop around You really need to stand your ground with them about it.0
