Had a call today from MBNA regarding my husbands CC he has been trying to negotiate with them to reduce payments and stop interest etc.
Anyway they said that they can't accept his offer as they have looked into our account and as we booked a flight to Orlando on the card to take it to max?
Is this normal anybody got any advice please ?

Hi
Usually creditors will accept reduced payments if you are showing them you are struggling to meet the repayments or if you are on a dmp. They probably think that if you can afford a flight to Orlando you can afford to pay the full monthly amount.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 2014

MBNA are outrageous and will do anything to avoid accepting that you are in difficulties and must reduce payments etc.
If you haven't talked to National Debtline or CCCS then do so. I'd strongly advise you not to talk to MBNA on the phone as they use the phone to do all sorts of things that they wouldn't put in writing. It is no business of theirs if you have spent unwisely before getting to the point where you realise there is a problem.
I'd be patient and insist in writing to them that you are unable to make the payments. Are you reducing payments to all your creditors and have you done an income and expenditure form? If so, reiterate all the information. And, if you have already accepted that your credit file will be harmed, you could simply reduce the payments without waiting for their permission.
Be firm, be brave, don't negotiate on the phone and good luck. They are as bad as loan sharks but the law is on your side in several crucial respects. So long as you are paying what you can afford and keeping them informed you are doing what a court would instruct you to do in any case.0 -
Thank you so much for your response! You have said pretty much what i thought. As you say MBNA are outrageous. We have 2 cards with them and my husband negotitated payments with somebody on the phone then received a call a couple of says later from somebody else who said there was nothing on the computer about the previous call.
Capital One is another story I have paid exactly what they have asked for and on time but they continue to harrass me! Phone call after phone call:(
I am ashamed to say we have buried our head in the sand really. We are in a huge amount of debt and it is making me ill. We need to sort out letters to cc companies etc. urgently.0 -
By the way MBNA are going to phone hubby on Monday what should he say to them ?0

Start with a plan of actionWe need to sort out letters to cc companies etc. urgently.
Create a spredsheet so you know who you've communicated with and at what you're at with each creditor / DCA
Another good start would be to complete your SOA (Statement of Affairs) click here so the members can assit you with your I&E.
Good luckClick here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional0 -
