DC08 Dyson - Electric shocks!

I bought a Dyson DC08 in the Argos RO sale on October 9 2004 which came with a 2 yr guarentee (I still have the receipt). I have for some time been getting static electric shocks off the hoover when hoovering. Has anyone else had a problem with the Dyson Animal? What should I expect from Dyson? I have looked online at a site where one lady was just told to polish the hoover with household spray polish
and that should reduce the static shocks. I have hoovered when wearing my MP3 player (I like to have music loud when doing housework but dont want to bother my neighbours so use headphones) and have even had electric static shocks coming through my headphones and zapping my ears and my MP3 going off for no reason!
What can I do ?

What can I do ?

I have the dc07 animal. and whilst I am prone to static myself I had no problem with ours since we got it 3 years ago.
Do you get the static when not earing the headphones, I wonder if some how this is travelling up the wires. The appliance may be badly earthers or you may have a bad earth in the sockets. Does it happen all over the house in different sockets?0 -
It makes no difference whether I use my headphones or not or which plug I plug it into. I have laminated flooring downstairs and its always when I am hoovering carpets. In the space of hoovering my stairs (normal size) my MP3 went off 5 times shorting it out. I have not used my MP3 player while hoovering since but it doesnt stop the shocks. Today I got 3 shocks on the stairs, 2 on the landing, 1 in my bedroom and 2 in my sons.0

I bought one of the Dyson cannisters at the Somerfield special last month, and had the same shocking experience. I telephoned the help number posted on the machine, and the Dyson rep told me that it was just static, and it will diminish over time. You can wipe down the machine and extensions with a rag with dilute fabric softer, just damp, not wet. Or you can rub one of the Pledge dust cloths from the packet. Both will help.0

When you clean your carpet you create static electricity the same as rubbing a balloon over your hair.
Your TV screen does the same thing and if you put your arm near the front your hairs will go towards the TV.
Just buy an antistatic wrist strap from computer shops and see if that helps :-)I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
The static will be made worse depending on the type iof carpet. IE the more nylon in the mixture the worse it will become.
As I said I get prone to static but not hoovering though.0 -

If the rep said it will diminish over time then how long do I have to wait? I have had my dyson over 1 yr already0 -

Oh no, the shocks won't go away?? I didn't think it would be a forever thing. I don't have an answer, did some research:
I put the following words into Google:
Dyson Vacuum static shocks
and got these reviews on the first page:

Static shocks
Summary
I bought the Dyson DC05 in early December 2003 and immediately contacted Dyson because I was getting static shocks. I was told this sometimes happened with a new cleaner and the problem should disappear within a few weeks. In the meantime, I should spray the hoses with anti-static furniture polish. During this time I moved house and I now only have 4 rugs to vacuum as the whole house has hard floors. However, even on these 4 rugs I get the static shocks which makes it very unpleasant to use the cleaner. There is no problem using the cleaner on the hard floors.
I contacted Dyson one week ago and they sent an engineer very quickly. He said he had never heard of this problem before and did not know what to do. However, he did get the shocks himself. I heard the cracks!! He went off to speak to someone higher up, so I am presently waiting to hear the outcome.
This is a very good cleaner with excellent suction, but that's not much good if you dread using it. I wouldn't recommend it unless you can try it out first. I will let you know the outcome.

This vaccum cleaner and shock training collars have in my opinion one thing in common, neither are kind to use so.... beware!!!!!!!! I have contacted Dyson to explain my dilemma, I cannot use this machine because when I do I get static shocks from it, not just a slight discomfort but a current that causes me to let go of the machine, it catches my legs, my hands and any part of my body that dares to make contact with the metal. My phone calls led to being read a statement about static electricity and how to combat it but after using a considerable amount of furniture polish and strapping heavy duty elastic bands around the tubes I am still unable to use this machine comfortably. My argument is that had I been advised about this problem prior to purchase, e.g a warning label on the box, I would not have bought the machine. I asked Dyson if they would replace my machine with the upright version but even though they admit there is a problem which they are trying to solve they are unable to help as the fault is not a mechanical one. The appliance is powerful and does what it says but unfortunately has trained me not to go anywhere near it!!!!!!!

Its Like Zappy Training Collar for a Dog!, January 19, 2006
I didn't find out that this machine constantly gives static shocks every time it is used until after I purchsed it from Amazon. If you don't mind feeling like a dog with a electric shock collar on or you truly don't mind the sudden and random jolts of static electricity then this machine is fine. I am amazed that they could even put this machine on the market without fixing this defect. Since my expensive and shocking purchaseI have gone to other online sites and found that this is a common problem. Shame on Dyson!0 -
I have also googled dyson electric shocks etc and have come up with identical information. I never used to get shocks from it when we first had the hoover, but they are getting considerably worse. It is much worse than a static shock you might get when touching (for example) a supermarket trolly. You really do feel like you have been zapped! I dont want to fork out for another hoover and it seems from the information I googled, Dyson just dont want to know0
