Laptop to Television - What connectors do I need?

Good morning all.

I have a 22 year old Sony Trinitron portable television that I keep in my 'boys room'.

I want to use my spare laptop to connect to the television in order I can use Youtube in a way similar to a jukebox, and show the videos through the TV.

The TV only has an round standard aerial socket on the back, and a similar aerial socket on the front, labelled a 'RF AUX' socket.

It is also connected to a sky receiver and a video player, which incidentally both have scart sockets, that connect to the TV through the round standard aerial socket.

The laptop has serial ports and a single USB slot, the latter I use for the internet dongle. It also has the ports that can be used to connect to a standard monitor.

So, my first question is, what lead can I buy to connect the laptop to the TV to achieve my required setup in the cheapest way possible?

If because of my aged equipment, or my current setup, I cannot achieve my required setup, what would you suggest to me?

Thank you for reading this and thank you for any suggestions. :T

I will respond to any questions, I will however be out in a while, for a while.

  • Hi, the easiest way to do this is to get a "vga to scart" cable.

Connect the scart to your VHS player, set the vhs player to AV channel and put you TV on the VHS channel.

Sound will still come from your laptop though.

    Approx £5 for the cable.
  • You could try using an S-video to scart connector like this one to connect the Laptop to the video, you would also need a twin phono to 3.5mm jack to connect the audio from the headphone socket

Once done, follow the instructions here to get it all working

[edit] I am not sure that Treponema's method would work to allow tv out. According to the Lenova site, the TV uses the S-video connection and there is the proviso "*Cannot be connected to the VGA output of a PC."[/edit], but may be worth a try as it is cheaper

Remember that CRTs generally cannot display resolutions greater than 640x480, which for a PC display is very low. So image quality will be pretty poor, not up to the standard that you are used too. Its on a portable, so give it a go, but don't expect too much.

True, wont be too bad if its only used for YouTube though, what res do they display their videos at? Full screen looks very boxy on my 1080p so may actually look better on a lower res screen.

Good evening, Thank you all for your responses and your suggestions.

I'm going to look into both cables.

To be honest, the image quality isn't a great concern to me, as long as I get something watchable. It'll just be for others to glance at whilst not playing pool etc.

    Thank you. :T
