I grate a carrot into mine to bulk it out and help thicken it. Personally I don't like it with tomatoes.

I wouldn't use tinned tomatoes in a cottage pie: it would turn it into a Bolognese sauce!

I would certainly add a splash (or even a glug) of good old Worcestershire sauce (as recommended by :money: himself), and/or an OXO cube.

  • I don't add tinned tomatoes, but I do add a good squirt of tomato puree to help thicken the sauce ;)
  • I used to add toms into mine and it was delsih and stretched further, but now I just use:

    minced lamb
    onion
    tin of baked beans
    mash spuds
    grated cheddar

  • I used to add baked beans to my cottage pie and shepherds pie but I made the mistake of telling DH about them when he said how good it tasted. He immediately stopped eating it even though he thought it was great simply because he won't eat beans with gravy. So I didn't add them after that. Last weekend my son made shepherds pie and had some left over so brought it up for us to try [he moved into his own place with his girlfriend a couple of weeks before Christmas]. He told me what he'd added and beans was mentioned. I told him to serve it to his dad but not to tell him what was in it. He ate it no problem, said it was very tasty and had seconds.

OK peeps. It's in the oven now. This is what I did. Sweat off 2 onions, 1 clove of garlic and 4 carrots, sliced. Added 750g minced steak, allowed that to brown and then a good squirt of tomato puree, a good lug of worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, thyme and about half a pint of beef stock and allowed that to simmer for 20 mins. Put the whole lot in a big sort of lasagne dish and covered it with mashed potatoes and grated cheddar cheese.

I'll let you know what they all think of it!

Now see I love beans so does OH but the boys won't touch them...I usually hide whizzed/dried veggies in mine but do you think I would get away with pureeing some beans for a change??? I don't think they'd taste them and the colour wouldn't alter, just wondered has anyone pureed them before?
