Well done Stephen, its exactly how I've cooked mine for the past 50+ years .My late husband used to like a layer of baked beans between the meat and the mash though, and he always called it 'Alan's Dinner'
P.S. left over meat from a shoulder of lamb makes the best Shepards pie in the world0 -
sooz - you're missing a trick, here! This is what you say :-
Right, darling .. I obviously got it all wrong. Could you show me how you make it, please?
He does, you watch, you all eat and enjoy. A week later, you say Right, darling .. I obviously got it all wrong. Could you show me how you make it, please?

Keep on 'forgetting' his special little touches and you'll have one meal made a week by him until Christmas!
PS You could send him to me for a week. By the time he got back to you, he'd never criticise anyone's cooking again since I'm a great believer in training hubbies, kids and dogs by the same method!0 -
Hi sooz,
I've added your thread to the main cottage pie thread where you will be able to see all the variations that Old Stylers make.

I've been chucking in a good dollop of green tomato chutney the last few times I've made it, and Mr LW says it makes it really nice.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

I want to make a cottage pie and after reading the posts here I decided to bulk the meat out with veggies. I want to put swede in the meat mixture (not in with the mash topping). Do I need to cook the swede first or can I just put it in with the meat and onions etc? I'm thinking it won't be very soft if I dont cook it properly?0

dunno, if the raw swede would cook in time with other bits??
i have never put swede in shepperds pie before???

It will be fine as long as you cut it into small cubes (about the size of a butter bean). Or maybe you could put the swede in the mash on top? Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0

An alternative is to grate it so it cooks through and disappears in the gravy.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
