thanks rainmac I love the idea of making a book with quotes about being a mum in, and i can also include some pictures etc. I still want to stick with the 50 things i love about my mom thing, i think im going to do that now! not sure about journals as my mom doesnt write much like that. But good idea for some one else i have to buy for though..

    Thanks again! xx

If you would like some mum quotes please send me a PM with your email address, I've got a load saved in Word as I've made a mini book of quotes for a friend's birthday and going to make another for my mum for mother's day.

When my dad was 50 he was given a hamper full of 50 little things, some funny, some more serious, all labelled individually. If I remember there were things like playing cards with 'old' jokes, super glue 'for when things crack up', a CD of music from the year he was born, a few miniature bottles of brandy, lottery ticket etc.

Does she have any hobbies or interests? How about a hamper themed around that?

My aunt was given a 'five senses' hamper one birthday - silk scarf for touch, CD for hearing, perfume for smell, home made jam for taste - but I can't remember what the sight one was sorry!

I made up a box with 60 items in for my mum's 60th, mostly fun things, little treats, she spent a couple of days opening all the parcels.

    Hi
As someone about to suffer this milestone, the one thing I don't want is a card with the number emblazened on the front.(Personal choice!) I would recommend anything that makes her feel young and attractive(sorry- personal choice again!) because no matter what age you get to you never really FEEL that age and I for one certainly won't want to be reminded of it. As a present from a daughter, the 'collection' idea is lovely. You obviously all love her very much though and I'm sure she knows that, so I don't think you can fail with any of your ideas.;)

I completley agree about the card with 50 on it i wont be buying this as i dont want to upset her! I really like the idea of a box with 50 things in it, but what could i include in it, as obviously 50 things could be quite exepensive. Thank you so much for everyones ideas so far, I love them all. I made something yesterday for her, i just need to make 50 things I love about my mom even though i love her dearly, Im finding it hard to write 50 things down! Sounds horrible saying that doesnt it  .

    Thanks again x

  • How about brainstorming 50 things you could love about someone (anyone) and tweaking it to apply to your Mum? So perhaps starting with virtues/traits/adjectives. Some ideas - patience, honesty, loyalty, persistance, frugality, friendliness, fun, energy levels, selflessness, beauty, pragmatism, practical, observant, generosity etc. Then thinking about activities like cooking (love her home cooking), baking (she makes the best xyz), gardening etc.

Alternatively, how about a 50 Shared Memories box/jar/book? I wrote some on tiny cards that I put inside matchboxes for my children for Christmas and am going to make it an annual tradition, effectively so they can look back at fun things they did throughout their childhood. I entitled it "Remember When ... 2008" You could jot down 50 memories that you hold dear from experiences growing up or funny things your Mum has said, sayings you have held onto etc.

How about, depending on your budget, a professional photograph of you & your mum (or any other family members). Often the smaller photographers do a package where they take several 'staged' photo's & you get to choose 'x' amount of photo's for a set price. They may encourage you to buy more, because then they charge per photo depending on the size etc. We did this for my parents many years ago & they were so thrilled. As extra gifts we bought photo frames (not from photographer as they were too expensive, as photo's only supplied in cardboard mount) & purchased extra photo's which we kept for christmas presents etc.

I reckon a spa day spent with you would be wonderful for her.

The 50 things, cor you have set yourself a task there. How about a photo album with 50 family memories.

well I have looked on buyagift and have seen a mother and daughter photoshoot, but my mom is not keen on pictures as she is low on confidence. I have looked at pamper days on there also but how do you find out places where they will be? thanks for all your ideas

  • HI there
Just to say I did a box for each member of my family for christmas.
I filled it with reasons why I loved them, memories I had, favorite things about them etc etc, you could also fill it with photos, vouchers of things to do or free vouchers of things u will do for her.
I have to say, it made most of the family cry and was free.
Also if u are looking for a photo shot thingy. Have a look at googling NEW ID they are all over the country, works out about £20 each and you get hair, make up, nails, bucks fizz and photo shoot and one photo at the end of it. I did it with my mum a few years ago and REALLY enjoyed it. They made us look amazing!!!!!!!

My mum was at a real low at the time and like your mum was low in confidence....

Think the piccy says it all....................

I make handmade cards and what I've found is a lot of people who are buying a card for a milestone birthday want to put the number on the card somewhere but don't want it on permanent view so I make a little envelope and a little card and put the number on that , then we put the tiny envelope on the main card so its there but not there if that makes sense ??
