knockin into existing extension

Hi,
This is my first post but I have been reading this forum for a while and I think it's great. I hope someone can help with my query.
We have a bungalow. It has a very large extension comprising of a large living room (with conservatory leading off) and a large bedroom. We are planning on knocking through into the living room part of the extension to form a kitchen/diner/living area. This will mean knocking down the original exterior back wall of the bungalow.
We have been in the house 16 months. When we bought the house no planning permissions or building regs certificates were produced. The solicitor advised us that this was not really an issue as the extension was done about 20 years ago.
We have spoken to the building control dept and they said we need calculations for the steel that will be needed. That is no problem and we already knew that. We will get a structural engineer to do the calcs.
What I'm concerned about is if they come to inspect the work we are doing and then start looking at the extension. I have no reason to suspect that there is anything 'wrong' with the extension but will they just look at the work we are doing or look at the rest of the extension too?
As far as I understand it the inspectors will only come round to see work once it's been started and I don't want them then to start talking about the extension.....and what would/could they do if it isn't up to current regulations?
I hope that makes sense. I would really value any advice. Sorry it's such a long post!!

Nothing will happen with the extension at all. After 12 months, building control can't take any enforcement action unless the structure is dangerous (which of course it isn't after 20 odd years) and I promise, they will only come and look at the steel. Your extension will not even raise an eyebrow.
