1and1 Server Prob - AM I ALONE

HI all,

i moved my new website onto the 1and1 site today and went live at approx (11.30 am). All was working fine -- then i modified a page and went to load it back on again but my comp couldn't reconnect to 1and1 ftp.

phoned helpline and they said there might be a prob with the server and they would look into it. 2hours later heard nothing and site still not working? ???

so does anyone else have a prob with a site hosted by 1and1? or can they suggest anyway i might verify if it's the server or something i've done! :-/

sorry i'm new to this whole web thing!!

I do notice that the help line is VERY BUSY all of a sudden so this would suggest everyone's having probs - either that or they are dodging my calls!!!

also is a 08708 503 305 line FREE..it states in their lit that it is but i'm not convinced!!

cheers

fraz

  • As you suspected, that support number isn't free. From the FAQ - "All calls cost £0.0791 per minute 8am and 6pm and £0.0369 per minute 6pm to 8pm From a BT Land Line".

For the FTP problems, some web hosting companies provide a 'status' web page which shows current problems with their servers. Check whether 1and1 have this.

A simple check to see if their FTP server is down is to open a command window (I presume you're running Windows - Start - Run - type in cmd and press Return) and then type:

    ping <ftp hostname> <return>

    e.g. ping ftp.myaccount.1and1.co.uk

This should return several 'replies' if the server is up.

The server might be up but not accepting logins and therefore you won't be able to upload any files to it. To test this, try logging in to the ftp server from the command window:

    ftp <ftp hostname> <return>

Enter your username at the prompt, then your password.

    Type bye <return> to logout.

Sounds like they had a genuine problem.

I've been with 1&1 for over a year now and they're great. If you dont want to phone their support drop them an email from the contact us menu - they usually answer within 24 hours!

I just pop in now and then.... :)
