Is a pic of the memory type chip u may have ... please note the 2 offset notches so it can only be fitted one way round ..

Sound like the MB's backup battery has died and the settings have been lost - since the date has been reset - does it keep the date if you reset it - via the BIOS

I cannot see a BIOS listed that uses F4 to enter it - is there a message also ? You should be using F2 to enter the BIOS. The F8 is trying to catch windows before it boots so after the BIOS-y type messages

Yes, my mistake, it is F2 to enter the bios.

I'm struggling right now - I'm afraid I'm overwhelmed by all this advice, although I'm so grateful to you all- this is so new to me, so I'm going to sleep on it and start again tomorrow - but thank you so much for your advice and patience!! I'll report back tomorrow, if anyone is around then..
