As far as I know if that does happen and u get charged roaming costs even tho ur still technically in the north then u are entitled to get a refund for the roaming costs incurred.
You need to write to o2 I think tho and its a lot of hassle but I know a few people who did get their refund eventually!0 -
It happened to me a few times with Vodafone (and not even close to the border) and they didn't even bother to reply to me when I contacted them.0

I emailed 02-UK when the story broke.

Thank you for contacting O2 Customer Service.
There are no immediate plans to abolish roaming charges to Ireland, but we continually review our tariffs to provide the best possible value for our customers.
We are currently looking at introducing a new tariff to reduce the costs of roaming across the border.0 -
T-Mobile have also launched a simiilar offer but this is available to UK customers unlike the O2 offer. It is 25p/min when on the Meteor network with no monthly fee. You do need to sign up for it though. https://www.t-mobile.co.uk/worldclass0

My sister uses her mobile a lot in the south to phone to the north, mobiles and landlines, and from the north to phone a south mobile. Could she go to the south and get a south mobile?0

Of course but then she woudl have to use another phone number. If that is OK for her then I would recommend that. Mind you, on the O2 and T-Mobile tariffs a roaming call may be cheaper than a UK call - e.g. T-Mobile charge 25p per min whislt an off net call peak call may cost more than that depending upon your tariff.0

THANKS for responding! She doesn't mind having another number. Would she need to have an address in the south or can she get the phone with an address in the north? What id would she need?0 -
BT can allow you to make calls on your land line from the North, thereby recognising the fact that while we can telephone to the UK for normal costs that we should not be penalised for wanting to phone somebody 40 or 50 miles away.
I understand that this is a little easier to police with a fixed line installation, but really the roaming charges in the border area on mobiles are taking the mickey.
It's about time that the mobile phone companies did something about this.
Good luck all,
