Long overdue, hopefully other operators will follow suit.

only applies to customers in the republic roaming in the north.
northern ireland customers roaming south will still get charged.Plenty of mistakes, but no regrets.0 -
If they opened it up to Northern Ireland customers then they'd have to open it up to the rest of the UK. That's what's probably holding them back and they're weighing up the cost implications of such a move.
O2 UK can't necessarily "regionalize" their call charges.
If you're from Northern Ireland and roaming in the Republic and you're paying less than an English businessman or holidaymaker who's also roaming - it's not entirely fair on the Englishman.
Aren't the EU talking about abolishing roaming charges by 2010-2012 anyway?0 -
At least its a start and about time they sorted this all ireland raoming charges madness!
But I live in Northern Ireland and am regularly in the south so I will still have to pay roaming costs if i stick with o2 UK.
However the simplest solution for me is to buy a new o2 Ireland sim card and this way I can go north and south without incurring damn roaming costs!!0 -
absurd isn't it?0
-
yeah its crazy and i dont know how they got away with it for so long.
But at least we're getting somewhere now. I live on the north/south border and I'm with o2 UK - but sometimes when I go to get petrol my phone switches to o2 Ireland and I'm charged roaming costs - aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!

which other uk providers operate in ireland?0
-
I'm not sure what other providers there are (if any) that operate in the both the uk and Ireland.
Altho I do remember looking into raoming charges and I was reliably informed that o2 were the best for raoming bewteen north and south0 -
I have a caravan in the republic and the only time in the year i end up paying for calls is when i'm in donegal if another provider offered free roaming for us northerners in the south i'd change in a flash, so be warned O2!!!!!
ps if we had any politicans worth their salt they would have sorted this out long ago!0 -

I'm on the north/south border too. There are certain areas still in the north which prompt me to receive a "Welcome to Ireland" text message. So roaming rates apply. However I don't get a "Welcome to UK" text message when I am out of the confused area. While I hardly use my phone...a tenner on PAYG lasts me about two months...I haven't bothered to complain about it. But there must be other people and companies getting ripped off and don't realise. It definitely needs to be addressed by the mobile phone companies .0
