Running a local half marathon for a local charity

Hi,

I hope somebody can help, or point me in the right direction. I have made the decision to run a local half marathon and would like to raise some money whilst doing this. There does not seem to be any information that there is a fixed charity that you need to raise money for. My local playgroup have had a bad time recently and could do with all the help they can and as they are a charity I would love to raise money for them.

Am I able to do this, I am new to running half mararthons and don't want to do anything wrong.

Hope this all makes sense. Thanks xx

As long as you tell the playgroup what you are doing, there is no problem. They may be able to help you with publicity and other info for you to give to potential sponsors.
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths

You can raise money for who you like :o. many half marathons and marathons have their chosen charity for the year and encourage you to raise money for that charity (and often a small amount of your entry fee goes to this charity too) but there's nothing to say you can't give your money to whoever you like :D

You may have to make up your own sponsor form but I'm sure your playgroup would be only too happy to help - and remember, as they are a charity then you can do "gift aid" whereby they can claim some tax back form the govt.

hope that helps - and good luck with your training :D
  • Thank you ever so much for your replies, that has helped alot. I think the raising money will be the easy bit, the thirteen miles might not be quite so easy!!

The thirteen miles will be easier on the day because you have in your mind a good reason to keep going. When I ran the London Marathon, I had my own place but raised money for Leukaemia research, and when the going got tough, i thought that running 26.2 miles was nothing compared to what some of these kids have to go through.
You can break the miles down into say 1 mile = 10 pots of paint for nursery (for example) as it might help with motivation

which one are you doing btw?
