Holidays in Long Island or Beaches of New England

Just checking if anybody has recommendations for July in this part of the US. We have quite good flights from Dublin to either New York or Boston. But I'd really like to see the beaches of Long Island or Cape Cod as well as the cities. We normally camp in France on the big sites, & I don't really like hotels usually too cramped. Has anybody been, is it ok to stay in a Motel or are they really seedy like the movies. Any info appreciated. Its for 2 adults & 2 teenagers in early July 1-16th
thanx

We've done a couple of those type of touring holidays with our 3 kids (2 are teenagers) and we found it fine. There are a few of the seedy looking "Bates Motel" type places -they're generally v cheap though. We prefer the Best Western and Days Inn chain -tend to be about 80-90 usd per night plus tax (which can add another 12/13 % depending on state) and some of these have a kitchenette, sofabed plus the 2 large doubles. After a week or so, we all start to crave a bit of space -so maybe you could take a condo for 3 or 4 days, to give you all some space, plus a break from the driving around?

Might be a good idea to book in advance as you're going to be there over the 4th July holiday.

This sounds so daft but whats a condo?
I was looking at some holiday home rentals but they are running about 1500-2000 USD a week!! Do the Days Inns have any kind of facilities, or are more like our Travelodges?
    Thanks

    A condo is a condominium, i.e a flat in a high rise with usually a kitchen\bedrooms etc.

Look at sites like VBRO for what's available, this may be a cheaper option than Hotels\Motels for the size of your party.

Look at Tripadvisor for hotel ratings and comments.
Some cheap motels can be really scary:eek:

As has been said the 4th 'weekend' (from Friday 30th June-Wed 5th July) will be very busy in that area.

Traffic can be horrendous at the best of times and there's only one real major route to the two bridges that get onto Cape Cod.

On Cape Cod itself (70 miles long) ther'es only ONE route through the whole Island and its msotly single carriageway.

I did this last year at about the same time and basically you have to avoid travelling at the weekend to avoid the traffic.

Only did this as a couple and used Priceline to get some good deals in Boston and a dodgy motel on Cape Cod.

    Enjoy

I have had the same problems and we are now having to pay £1,300 for one weeks rental. It is considered luxury but I would have been happier paying less for a little less luxury! However, because we are there over the July 4th Holiday there is very little choice for a much higher price.
I would think you would pay roughly the same for a hotel at that time of year.
I have been searching for the past week and my step-mum had been searching her contacts there ( my Dad & Step-mum live in the U.S) but with little success but now we have booked the flights etc. we had to settle for what was available.
We are travelling with 2 teenagers and were concerned that a lot of driving could be a little difficult and decided on 2 weeks at the beach with day trips elsewhere would be the easiest solution.
