Oops, made a mistake

I've just bid and won an item but now realise that it's not the model I thought I was bidding on and it's not what I want.

Am I right in assuming I have to buy it?

I know there's nothing worse than stupid bidders  and I dont want to get a negative feedback for not paying.

Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Thanks

You're commited to buy - unless you want a neg, why not buy it then sell it on again? ;)

The seller can claim final value fees back and you can avoid a strike if the seller selects "Buyer changed their mind" on the unpaid item dispute form. Problem is they won't get listing fees back so unless it was a Buy It Now auction with more than one available they would be losing out.
  • Were there any other bidders? If there were, you could try writing to the seller and explain that you have made a mistake and that the item wasn't the model you were bidding on. Ask if they would be willing to mutually agree not to continue with the transaction, and give a second chance offer to the second highest bidder instead. Make sure you say that you understand the eBay rules so are perfectly willing to pay for it if they still want you too.

Hopefully, if you have an understanding seller that might work, but you do risk the chance of them not being so understandng and getting a negative feedback, or possibly a non-paying bidder strike if they do not complete the Unpaid Item Process correctly.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

I think a very carefully worded email is the way I will go first - to test the waters, so to speak.
If it is going to cause problems, I'll just have to buy the item.

    Yep.
You're going to have to put this one down to experience.
Of course, as you now own the item, there's nothing stopping you from auctioning the item yourself. Who knows? You might even make a profit!

  • E-mail the seller explaining the situation and state that you are willing to pay the re-listing fee for them.
If they are reasonable (like me :rotfl: ) they 'might' agree.

If not pay for it, sell it on and learn from your mistake. ;)
