Comet - Credit Card Fraud Spike

Just a heads up...
This morning I received a invoice from comet for a laptop, which I haven't ordered.
Spoke to Comet, very helpful and polite, said that there had been several orders placed on my card and they had already flagged them and refunded all bar the first one and to phone my bank.
Abbey were great and told me that they have had A LOT of fraudulent transactions placed with Comet in the last few days and they have asked Comet what is going on.
I only use my credit card once in a blue moon anyway and always with household name stores, destroy anything with card/name/address details on, keep anti-virus, firewall, malware etc upto date. I never use the card in RL as I don't know the PIN so it hasn't been skimmed and until today I have never had an issue.
However, I did make an online transaction with Comet about 9 months ago.

I'm wondering if this isn't a hang over from a fraud operation that ran last year in the UK where a garage forecourt kiosk was rigged to record pin numbers (don't ask me how.)
Main point is, the fact you made a purchase from Comet nine months ago doesn't signify, because once a scammer has your card details / PIN a purchase can be made anywhere.
It used to be the case that scammers had a problem because of card addressee ID -- the goods ordered had to be delivered to the cardholder's address -- but there's now an increasing security issue with in-store pick-ups, a nice facility offered by many retailers but which actually means that goods aren't despatched to any address at all.
So someone could fraudulently use a card with, say, Comet or Argos or any other in-store pick-up facilitator and the question of address confirmation never comes into it, though a fraudulent pick-up is unlikely to occur more than 50 miles from the store lest some address ID be requested -- a scammer from Penzance is going to have difficulty proving they really needed to collect from Aberdeen, no matter how persuasive their phony IDs.
Assuming they're even asked for it.0 -
