Orange screwed me

Orange PLC, the mobile people, has put a bad reference on my credit file by mistake. The claim that i owed them £93 in dec when my account was actually in CREDIT!!!!! This has led to my loan being rejected and the purchase of my new house has fallen through.

In short, this has actually cost me £450, but as the house i was due to buy was a repossesion at a rediculously low cost (3 bed semi, good condition, £75000), it could potentially cost me around £15-20K in extra cost to find a similar property when this has all been sorted out!!!!.

Can i take them to court? Can i expect them to pay as i have done absolutley nothing wrong?

What can i do? We are gutted. We have (had) an exectional credit score before this with no problems but this error by them has dropped my credit score to around 500.

Please, please advise.

I'm sorry but you won't get rejected for a mortgage for a £93 bill from December, particularly if it is in error.

If this really is the reason you should contact your mortgage company with details from orange of the error and ask them to manually underwrite your application.

If you have not already done so you should write to orange asking for the default to be removed and land them with a claim for you survey costs etc and see how far you get.

Unfortunately I imagine their liability is limited but they might settle with you to avoid you taking it further.

Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

do you have it in wiritng that this is the ONLY reason for the rejected mortgage?

New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • It wasnt the mortgage that was rejected, as far as i know that is still ok. It's the loan that i need to consolodate credit cards and furnish the house that was rejected. Without this loan, i cant afford the mortgage so i had to pull out.

I do have a credit report from Dec showing credit score in the 800's.
Januarys score shows this default as the only change and the score dropped to 530!!!

They wont tell me the exact reason it was rejected, they just say "Experian says.....".

Sorry Rafter but I have come across this before whereby a mobile phone company had put a default on a customer's account and their mortgage application was declined UNTIL it was cleared.

To OP get it in writing that this is the sole reason for the decline and get Orange to correct your file - this should not take long - you should then be able to proceed?

So the mortgage was approved but your loan was rejected :) Not quite the same thing... The "rating" is not really anything to go by anyway - but I have been rejected for loans when mine has been in the 900s so there is no guarantee that you would have been approved anyway. Depending on your available credit, number of credit searches and outstanding loans then it might have had very little to do with Orange and the error.
I doubt you will get very far with compensation as I doubt the loan company will ever tell you outright that it is because of THAT entry... so it could be argued that it could be other reasons combined etc that resulted in you failing the credit check.
