Wonder if anyone can help...

Hubby been full time employed for years and I also work 30 hours per week

Last year looked like redundancy on the cards for hubby so whilst he was still working ( car repairer) we bought a van so her could go self employed (mobile). Did not advertise etc but hubby got couple of jobs via friends etc not enought to live on but a little bit. Set up all the stuff needed for a business (let HMRC etc).

Fast forward to today.. It is hubbys last day today redundant as of 5pm tonight!!!

My question is.. He is looking for work but in the mean time going to try the self employed route ( have had leaflets printed etc)

Can he apply for any kind of job seekers allowance?? It could take a couple of months until work picks up or is he not allowed.

He's allowed to be self employed you just have to declare when you work and what you earn and it is deducted from any benefit due.

You say youve let HMRC know. I presume that means he has registered as self employed with the inland revenue. That has to be done within 3 months of being self employed or else you would be fined. Did you register whilst he was still working as that money is taxable and needs to be declared?

If you phone and make an appointment for contributions based JSA they will tell you exctly what he can and cant do

Registered with HMRC straight away but the business has made no money yet (if you get what i mean)
