Insuring items whilst in storage

hi all

ive been ringing round a lot of insurance companies tonight as im trying to get a few quotes for someone to insure my home contents which are going into storage soon

im moving into my girlfriends family home to save some extra money towards a deposit so it could be anything up to 6 months i guess

the storage place say they've got their own insurance which is £3.47 per month for every £1k of cover required - i think this is a bit steep!

any names/numbers/advice very much appreciated

jason

Usually the best bet is to tell your current insurers, they will normally cover it at no extra cost.

The rate they are quoting isn't steep. It's extortionate. And, in my (painful) experience, it sometimes just means they don't have an insurance policy, they will pay you themselves for any loss/damage, at their own absolute discretion.

Hi, Mine is Norwich Union Direct, they sorted mine out whilst I had to move for a year, you have to tell them what each thingis worth or cost, write down as things go into boxes into a book and number the boxes, I put my boxes inside a black bags taped up with number stuck so I could see it easily, saves so much trouble ,you just look at the list and find the number box, telephone number 0800-888-223 or https://www.norwichunion.com good luck, rowena

no need to answer that

just rang them and as ive not got a policy with them at the moment they dont wonna know, reckoned it would then be an additional amount on top of the normal premium (as it'll be in storage), where the storage unit it, and how long it'll be in there for

then it's a fixed policy for 12 months meaning if i cancel it early they'll charge £30-50. can't understand this, i would of thought there'd be a market out there for people like me (i know there wouldn't be a massive demand but there's surely money to be made all the same)

Can you not take out a new contents policy for your present address with one of the above, telling them that you will want covering for part of the first year while in storage?

A year's policy with any of the normal firms will probably be less than a month's premium with those rob-dogs who are storing your goods.

Or ask a different firm about storage for an inclusive cost?

We have just taken out a storage contract with Safestore in London. Their Whitechapel branch did a price match with Big Yellow at £75 per 4 week period (is this a competitive rate?) which was about half the price they originally quoted to us. We did not want any contents insurance at all but Safestore insisted that we need to take cover. As our Halifax policy does not cover items in storage we were 'forced' to take the cover at at Safesore for £10.80 per 4 week period (very expensive for £2000 of cover)

Having read the T&C of the contract very carefully, it does not say that insurance is cumpulsory either legally or as part of Safestore's terms of business. The word used is 'recommended' (point 19 of T&C)

We will be contesting this with company. Does anyone out there have any views/experience in this matter and on the rates we are being charged? Thanks
