Flights to Sicily end of May - why so expensive?

Trying to book a cheap flight for me and the missus to Sicily between 22nd May - 1st Jun (prob take 5-7 days). I'm a complete novice at doing it online.
They're a bit dear , the ones i've found! Jumps from £140 approx in the week before and after to £300+ in the time we want to go.
I know the 22/25th May is a bank holiday for most but why the big jump! Any hints/tips much appreciated.
I live in Glasgow, so flying from Glasgow or Prestwick are preferred but willing to go via other airports if the price is right.
And is it unwise to go with Alitalia just now, because of their troubles financially recently??

You've answered your own question there... it's the bank holiday and Sicily is nice and warm. Try going the previous week or in early June and it'll be much cheaper. Also, try looking at flying somewhere on the mainland and then take the train / ferry across... Italian trains are cheap and fast.0

That week is also half term - pick another week!0

With Ryanair, you could fly from Prestwick - stansted on 25th May returning on 1st June for £91 and fly from Stansted to Palermo on 26th May returning 1st June for £159. You would need a cheap hotel in Stansted for 1 night - a Travelodge?
Total £250 for 2 people + a hotel0 -

There has been little mention of the trouble at Alitalia recently, so it can't be too bad, and the merger with Air One seems to be progressing fairly well. Certainly they're still flying. I personally think that the Italian government would never let it collapse, but of course I have no evidence to prove that. So I'd say yes use it if it's cheapest, but if there's something else not too dissimilar in price use that instead.0 -
