Transferring DV over firewire problem

I'm transferring DV from my cam to my computer. I have an odd problem: I can only capture a few seconds of footage and then the connection 'hangs', and to get it back I need to restart the computer.
It's not a straightforward firewire issue, because I can watch the 'live' output from the camera on my PC just fine. I can also play a tape through without a problem. When I go to actually capture it to HD, I get this issue. It seems that I can capture the sound alone without a problem, but not sound and video or just video on its own.
My HD has enough capacity. I've tried saving to internal and external drives. My drives are not fragmented either.
I even went so far as to build a filter using GraphEdit, and it still manifested the same problem.
Any ideas?
