1 Bed Flat Bills - advice please!

Hi everyone,

I am considering buying a new one bet flat in Milton Keynes which is gas and electric.

Please can you advise roughly how much the following may cost per month, based on one person:
  • Electric
  • Water
  • Gas
(Have I missed any utility bills?!)

I am careful and would turn things off at the plug when not using them etc.

Thank you in advance for any advice,

Abbi x

is the heating gas or electric? Is the hot water gas or electric?
Have you seen an energy performance certificate - to give an idea of how well insulated it is?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

I'm on my own in a one bedroom flat.

Water/sewerage costs £17.50 combined (metered with Bristol Water & Wessex Water). I use the washing machine twice a week, small dishwasher every day, shower once/twice a day and flush the bog everytime I use it.

I've only been here over the winter, but November to January cost £36 for the electricity - I use electric to heat and cook. That is on British Gas Click Energy 6 in the SWEB region (cheapest supplier for me). Between September and October, I was with EDF - that cost £55.

The building is victorian, top floor flat with single glazed windows.

I assume you mean per month and not per quarter??

Most new build flats are not supplied with gas so you are lucky if you find one that is. If you read around the board you will find people's bills vary widely, depending upon how sensible people are with their energy. I have seen electricity usage four times the size of ours - if you want a cozy flat from October to March or to sit around in a light sweater you will pay through the nose for it, pure and simple. :rotfl:

We are two in a two bedroom all electric double-glazed flat. Water £20 a quarter - but we are sensible in general, and one of us showers at the gym several times a week. Our last electricity bill - based on correct readings - was £101 for the quarter. We do laundry at 40C, never tumble dry, and only heat our main living area on frosty days. We have a heated underblanket on the bed, nothing left on standby but not managed energy saving bulbs as yet! :o

We've just moved into a new build one bed flat.

In the first two months we used £120 a month on electric - its electric only flat so used for heating, cooking, everything.

Now we've figured out a few things (thanks to the people on this site),
we've managed to reduce it down to 20units a day.

    20 units x 30 days = 600 units per month x 10p per unit
(after the first 220 units) = £60 per month

We're in the process of switching from EON stanard to NPower - so hopefully will be cheaper still as they gave us much better deal.
Currently we pay 23p for the first so many hundred units, then 10p after that.
NPower first few hundred are only 15p, then drop down to 10p.

We haven't received a water bill yet - the end of our first quarter is coming up this month - kind of nervous about it!! We wash up once a day, cook and have either 2 showers or share a bath... no idea how much thats going to equate to. We originally budget £15 a month based on my old house in Bath, but have upped it to £35 to be on the safe side til we get a bill.
Saving like a looney for a juicy deposit and fees!
